Worry for Chelsea as PSG lodge big-money bid for Leandro Paredes

As per a report from reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Ligue 1 giants PSG have submitted an opening offer for Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder Leandro Paredes.

Zenit stint

24-year-old Argentinian international Paredes has been plying his trade in Russia since the summer of 2017, when Zenit agreed to splash out an initial fee of 23 million Euro to secure his signature from Serie A outfit AS Roma.

And, after impressing in Italy, the all-action midfielder has since gone on to develop his game further at the Saint Petersburg Stadium.

Last season, between the Russian Premier League and Europa League, Paredes racked up an impressive 5 goals and 8 assists, with his 14 yellow cards also proof of the fact that the South American is not afraid to put himself about when required.

To this point in the current campaign, meanwhile, Paredes has started in 15 of Zenit’s 17 league outings, playing a crucial role in his side’s emergence as table-toppers.

Chelsea interest

As such, unsurprisingly, the Boca Juniors youth product’s showings over the last 18 months have not gone unnoticed across Europe.

Both Juventus and Real Madrid were hotly-tipped as potential destinations for Paredes last summer.

However, the outfit rumoured to be expressing the most serious interest in the Argentine’s signature of late have been Chelsea.

The Blues are known to be on the lookout for reinforcements in the middle of the park, following Cesc Fabregas’ departure for Monaco.

And Paredes, along with Nicolo Barella of Cagliari, sits atop the rumoured wishlist of Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri.

A report from the Telegraph last week even went as far as to suggest that the Londoners had clinched deals in principle for both midfielders.

PSG emerge

However, to this point, neither transfer has come to fruition.

And, in a potentially-crucial blow to Chelsea’s hopes of securing a midfield addition this month, it has this afternoon been revealed that Ligue 1 champions PSG have lodged an opening bid to Zenit for Paredes.

As confirmed by the reliable Gianluca Di Marzio, the French outfit tabled a 35 million Euro offer for the Argentine.

Zenit, for their part, though, are said to be holding out for a fee closer to 45 million Euro.

Significantly, Di Marzio also adds that Chelsea have not yet actually proposed an offer for Paredes.

Chelsea’s hopes of clinching Nicolo Barella’s signature this month were also dealt a blow earlier this week, when Cagliari director of sport Mario Passetti assured during an interview with Rai Sport that the Sardinian outfit’s star man would not be allowed to depart in January.

PSG’s Weigl pursuit

Interestingly, news of PSG’s bid for Paredes, meanwhile, comes just hours after Le Parisien suggested that the capital outfit had convinced Borussia Dortmund to part ways with Julian Weigl.
