Steven Gerrard slams Rangers defending after Spartak Moscow

Rangers would take on Spartak Moscow in the Europa League on Thursday evening and lose the game 4-3.

‘But I think U12s and U13s can normally can clear the ball with either foot’

After the clash, Steven Gerrard has slammed his sides defending and compared them to under 12’s and 13’s.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Gerrard stated:

“But I think U12s and U13s can normally can clear the ball with either foot and when you get a little bit older you learn to play the game positionally. So no I’m a bit confused over that one.”

Gerrard would also add:

“Normally to come here and score three goals you get a result. But I’m bitterly disappointed with how we defended. You saw two sides of our performance tonight.

“We attacked very well and were very dangerous and countered very bravely and got our rewards and took control at halftime.

“We didn’t do the basics well enough or clear our lines at the right times and on other occasions, we were not in the right positions.

“People who have had a lot of praise and who did really well to get us to this stage just didn’t do the basics well enough.”

Spartak Moscow 4 Rangers 3

Thursday’s game with Moscow started off well for Rangers as they went 1-0 up inside five minutes thanks to an own goal.

Lorenzo Melgarejo would bring Moscow level in the 22nd minute. But Daniel Candeias would regain Rangers the lead just five minutes later.

Rangers would then score an own goal to make it 2-2, which was quickly followed by a Glen Middleton goal to give Rangers a 3-2 lead shortly before halftime.

However, the second half was all Moscow and they would score twice to come away with a 4-3 win.

Rangers are now third in their group and are in danger of not qualifying.
