Chelsea struggling to tie down young stars
Chelsea are reportedly ‘no closer’ to securing new long-term contracts for breakthrough stars Reece James and Tammy Abraham.
Both players have burst onto the scene this season, having spent time in the Championship on loan during the last campaign.
Abraham spent the season with Aston Villa, where he scored 25 league goals.
Since returning to Chelsea, he’s already scored 13 goals in all competitions for the Blues.
Meanwhile, Reece James has started to stake his claim for a starring role at right-back.
Now, after their breakthrough season, Chelsea are looking to secure new deals for the pair.
Players such as Callum Hudson-Odoi, Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have all recently signed new contracts.
However, they’re finding that more difficult than they had probably imagined to tie Abraham and James down.
‘No progress’ made
According to the Telegraph, no progress is being made on new contracts for Abraham and James.
They claim: ‘Chelsea are no closer to agreeing contracts with Tammy Abraham or Reece James, having negotiated new deals with the rest of their first-team Academy graduates’.
They continue by explaining that the Blues are not preparing to announce a new contract for either player any time soon.
While the Telegraph doesn’t exactly give a reason for this, they speculate it could have something to do with Callum Hudson-Odoi’s new deal.
They suggest: ‘The fact 19-year-old Hudson-Odoi signed a five-year contract worth £120,000-a-week in September is likely to mean that Abraham wants at least parity, if not a better deal’.
