Leicester City’s Vicente Iborra joins Villarreal

Leicester City have this afternoon confirmed that midfielder Vicente Iborra has departed the club for La Liga outfit Villarreal.

Leicester stint

Iborra, a powerful 30-year-old midfielder, only made the move to the King Power Stadium in the summer of 2017, following a hugely-successful 4-year stint with Sevilla, during which he racked up a trio of Europa League titles.

Leicester’s signing of the Spaniard was subsequently viewed as something of a coup, though Iborra’s time in England has since proven something of an up-and-down affair.

Last season saw the Levante youth product rack up 19 Premier League appearances (17 starts), with Iborra having notched 3 goals in the process.

The campaign included a number of injury problems for the midfielder, though, with fans of the Foxes having no doubt hoped that Iborra would kick on to cement himself as a first-choice option for the current season.

However, this has since proven far from the case. To this point in the campaign, the experienced Spaniard has managed just 3 Premier League starts. All of Wilfred Ndidi, Nampalys Mendy and James Maddison have been preferred to Iborra as midfield options by Leicester boss Claude Puel.

Villarreal switch

As such, the 30-year-old has been heavily-linked with a potential return to Spain of late.

Sevilla were rumoured to have been keen to bring Iborra back to the club this month, but, as has since been made official this afternoon, fellow La Liga outfit Villarreal have won the race to secure the midfield powerhouse’s signature:

Iborra joins Villarreal on a four-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed fee.
